The airport's beginnings were as an airfield owned by Dr. Clifford 'Kip' Strange, who needed space for his biplane. The airport received its first commercial service is 1931, with the first regular trip being from Portland to Boston. The city of Portland bought the airport in 1933 and has owned it since. According to a 2011 survey, PWM is the third most affordable airport in New England (behind Connecticut's Bradley and Rhode Island's T.F. Green). Portland International's top destination is Baltimore, serviced by Southwest Airlines.
